downloads icon on bottom bar

I once accidentally removed the downloads icon on the very far-bottom right of the screen, on the bottom bar, beside the trash can. I was able to put it back, but now when I download something, it doesn't show up first. I have to go to the downloads folder to find it. How do I make it so that the last downloaded item shows up when I click on the downloads icon?
